A grinder uses a rotating wheel of carbide teeth to chip a stump down several inches below grade. The resulting mulch can be raked back into the hole, topped with soil, and seeded over.
Leaving a stump in place invites carpenter ants, termites, and fungi that can spread to nearby healthy trees and even into wood structures on your property.
Grinding also opens the space back up. You can replant grass, lay sod, install a flower bed, or plant a new tree just a few feet away once the area is cleaned up.
